    A hybrid algorithm for spatial and wavelet domain image restoration

    The recent algorithm ForWaRD based on the two steps: (i) the Fourier domain deblurring and (ii) wavelet domain denoising, shows better restoration results than those using traditional image restoration methods.     The interactive bending wrinkling behaviour of inflated beams

    ArticleA model is proposed based on a Fourier series method to analyse the interactive bending wrinkling behaviour of inflated beams. The whole wrinkling evolution is tracked and divided into three stages by identifying the bifurcations of the equilibrium path. The critical wrinkling and failure moments of inflated beam are then able to be predicted. The global-local interactive buckling pattern is elucidated by the proposed theoretical model and also verified by non-contact experimental tests. The effects of geometric parameters, internal pressure and boundary conditions on the buckling of inflated beams are investigated in the end. Results reveal that the interactive buckling characteristics of inflated beam under bending are more sensitive to the dimensions of the structure and boundary conditions. We find that beams which are simply supported at both ends or clamped and simply supported boundary conditions may prevent the wrinkling formation.     Phototransduction in Drosophila Is compromised by Gal4 expression but not by InsP3 receptor knockdown or mutation

    Drosophila phototransduction is mediated by phospholipase C, leading to activation of transient receptor potential (TRP) and TRP-like (TRPL) channels by mechanisms that are unresolved. A role for InsP(3) receptors (IP(3)Rs) had been excluded because IP3R mutants (itpr) appeared to have normal light responses; however, this was recently challenged by Kohn et al. ("Functional cooperation between the IP3 receptor and phospholipase C secures the high sensitivity to light of Drosophila photoreceptors in vivo," Journal of Neuroscience 35: 2530), who reported defects in phototransduction after IP3R-RNAi knockdown. They concluded that InsP3-induced Ca2+ release plays a critical role in facilitating channel activation, and that previous failure to detect IP3R phenotypes resulted from trace Ca2+ in electrodes substituting for InsP(3)-induced Ca2+ release. In an attempt to confirm this, we performed electroretinograms, whole-cell recordings, and GCaMP6f Ca2+ imaging from both IP3R-RNAi flies and itpr-null mutants. Like Kohn et al., we used GMRGal4 to drive expression of UAS-IP3R-RNAi, but we also used controls expressing GMRGal4 alone. We describe several GMRGal4 phenotypes suggestive of compromised development, including reductions in sensitivity, dark noise, potassium currents, and cell size and capacitance, as well as extreme variations in sensitivity between cells. However, we found no effect of IP3R RNAi or mutation on photoreceptor responses or Ca2+ signals, indicating that the IP3R plays little or no role in Drosophila phototransduction

    Effect of ZnO surface defects on efficiency and stability of ZnO-based perovskite solar cells

    ZnO as an alternative electron transport layer (ETL) material for perovskite solar cell applications has drawn increasing research interest due to its comparable energy levels to TiO2, relatively high electron mobility, as well as its feasibility to be processed at low temperatures for potential applications in flexible devices. Nevertheless, ZnO based perovskite devices usually exhibit inferior performance and severe stability drawbacks which are related to the surface defects of ZnO ETL. In this study, to investigate the correlation between ZnO defect composition and resulting device performance, different approaches of preparing ZnO ETL are compared in terms of the perovskite morphology and device performance. In addition, direct manipulations of ZnO surface defects are performed by various surface treatments, and the photovoltaic performance of devices with ZnO ETL subjected to different surface treatments is compared. Surface modification of ZnO ETL by ethanolamine (EA) is demonstrated to efficiently enhance the photovoltaic performance of resulting ZnO based devices. © (2017) COPYRIGHT Societypublished_or_final_versio

    Life-cycle and intergenerational effects of child care reforms

    We investigate the importance of various mechanisms by which child care policies can affect life-cycle patterns of employment and fertility among women, as well as long-run cognitive outcomes among children. A dynamic structural model of employment, fertility, and child care use is estimated using Norwegian administrative data. The estimation exploits a large-scale child care reform, which provided generous cash transfers to mothers who did not use formal child care facilities. We find that the reform generates sizable changes in employment and fertility decisions, especially among low-education women. We then use the mother's unobserved heterogeneity in the structural model as a control function to examine the effects of mother's behavior on long-run cognitive outcomes of children. The reform leads to lower reading scores among children, primarily as a result of mothers shifting to inferior forms of care. In counterfactual simulations, we compare the effects of an alternative child care subsidy, an expanded maternity leave program, and a tax deduction for mothers with children

    The Functional Study of the N-Terminal Region of Influenza B Virus Nucleoprotein

    Influenza nucleoprotein (NP) is a major component of the ribonucleoprotein (vRNP) in influenza virus, which functions for the transcription and replication of viral genome. Compared to the nucleoprotein of influenza A (ANP), the N-terminal region of influenza B nucleoprotein (BNP) is much extended. By virus reconstitution, we found that the first 38 residues are essential for viral growth. We further illustrated the function of BNP by mini-genome reconstitution, fluorescence microscopy, electron microscopy, light scattering and gel shift. Results show that the N terminus is involved in the formation of both higher homo-oligomers of BNP and BNP-RNA complex
